Opasquia Trails: Connecting Nature and Community

Opasquia Trails Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to developing and maintaining educational walking paths and trails in the northwest region of Manitoba. Our inaugural project is the Grace Lake Boardwalk and Boreal Trail, situated just east of The Pas, Manitoba at Grace Lake. This initiative aims to provide the community with accessible outdoor experiences while promoting environmental stewardship and appreciation for local wildlife.

The Grace Lake Boardwalk and Boreal Trail is a significant project that has evolved over time. The first phase involved the construction of a viewing platform overlooking Grace Lake, offering visitors a spot to observe local wildlife. Subsequent phases included the development of a floating boardwalk and a boreal forest trail loop, enhancing the accessibility and educational value of the area. The project has been a collaborative effort, with contributions from local volunteers, organizations, and the support of the R.M. of Kelsey, Town of The Pas , Opaskwayak Cree Nation and Manitoba Metis Federation.

In July 2023, the community celebrated the grand opening of the new boardwalk section, marking the culmination of years of planning, design, and fundraising efforts. The event highlighted the collective dedication to creating a space where nature and recreation intertwine seamlessly.

🐦 A Haven for Birdwatching and Nature Enthusiasts

Grace Lake has become a vibrant destination for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. The diverse habitats around the lake support a wide array of bird species, including waterfowl like Canada Geese and Mallards, woodland birds such as Ruby-crowned Kinglets and warblers, and raptors like Bald Eagles and Red-tailed Hawks. The Opasquia Trails organization has partnered with local birders to compile a comprehensive bird checklist, enhancing the educational experience for visitors.

🛤️ Looking Ahead: Expansion and Accessibility

Opasquia Trails Inc. continues to focus on expanding and enhancing the Grace Lake Boardwalk and Boreal Trail. Future plans include further development of the trail network, improved signage, and additional educational resources to enrich the visitor experience. The organization invites the community to participate in the growth and preservation of these natural spaces through donations and volunteer opportunities.
