Preserving the past, building the future.

Every community has places that hold its stories. Grant’s Old Mill is one of those places. For generations, the mill has stood along Sturgeon Creek as a reminder of where we come from, of the people who worked the land, built community, raised families, shared knowledge, and helped shape the history of St. James. It reflects the stories of the Red River Métis, Scottish settlers, and the many community members whose lives, labor, and legacies are woven into this place.

It is more than a building. It is memory. It is heritage. It is a place where children have learned, families have gathered, and community members have connected to the past in a way that feels real and meaningful.

Grant’s Old Mill also stands because of the vision and dedication of the committee members who spearheaded the project in 1974. Their commitment helped bring this important landmark to life so that the stories of Cuthbert Grant, early milling, Red River Métis history, Scottish heritage, and the broader St. James community could continue to be shared. Because of their work, generations have had a place to gather, learn, remember, and feel connected to the history beneath their feet. Today, Grant’s Old Mill is closed due to structural concerns. The wheel is still. The doors are closed. But the spirit of the mill is very much alive.

Our 50/50 raffle is a way for the community to come together and help protect this treasured landmark. Every ticket purchased is a small act of care — a way of saying that our shared history matters, our stories matter, and this place is worth saving. Funds raised will support Cuthbert Grant Day programming and the ongoing restoration efforts for Grant’s Old Mill, helping ensure that future generations can walk beside the creek, visit the mill, hear the stories, and feel proud of the Red River Métis, Scottish, and community history that lives here.

By purchasing a ticket, you are not just taking a chance to win. You are helping keep the wheel turning, the stories alive, and the heart of Grant’s Old Mill turning for generations to come.
